MUTANT FUNK on XLR8R
"This 'funky' thing, it'll be over in a minute. You can only say something is new once." If anyone has witnessed a genre come and go, it's Geeneus. The 30-year-old boss of London’s most influential pirate radio station, Rinse FM, Geeneus started broadcasting 15 years ago with guys like Wiley and Slimzee. They played strictly jungle back then; however, Geeneus is a self-professed “new thing addict” these days. He’s seen the arc of U.K. urban music burn through jungle, garage, and grime.
“The funky thing came about because girls had stopped dancing in clubs—[grime] was more of a show thing,” says Geeneus. “So people could just dance again, you know? It was 70% females. And now it's gone the completely opposite way again.”
Already, in less than a year and half, the style that's become known as U.K. funky has been banned, un-banned, and re-banned in countless South London clubs. Three generations of producers and DJs have effectively come and gone. And as the music crests toward perhaps a final stage, funky has splintered into a mutant, experimental phase via producers like Cooly G and Roska—right as the rest of the world has only just heard about it.

Phaeleh - Symbiosis Podcast
Phaeleh (pronounced “fella”) hits us with an urgent, attention grabbing, mix this week. His distinct sound fuses the dark and heavy sounds of Dubstep and Drum and Bass with the melodies and soundscapes of Electronica, all sealed together with the subtle textures of acousmatic music. But he doesn’t want you to think about that whilst you dance.. This mix is from the heart and was recorded after a long night out, straight to disk!
Phaeleh’s diverse range of influences gives him an equally diverse musical output which can range from disturbing bass lines and heavy Dubstep/Jungle beats, perfect for the rave, to the more soulful, restrained tracks incorporating a variety of sound sources and vocal styles.
In 2008 he started Urban Scrumping Records and continues to gig regularly across the UK and Europe…

FACT mix 83: El-B
As one half of Groove Chronicles with Noodles, and then with his Ghost crew, El-B brought giddy low end pressure and sharp, Photek style editing to the skippy, viscous rhythms of UK garage, unwittingly laying the foundations for dubstep in the process. Tracks like 'Stone Cold', 'Serious' and his remix of Zed Bias's 'Neighborhood' have become touchstones for fans of 2step, grime, funky house and beyond - revered by modern producers like Burial. For evidence, check Tempa's Roots of El-B compilation, compiled by Rinse DJ and all around bass blogger Martin 'Blackdown' Clark.
His FACT mix consists of his headline set from our last party. He's solo for the most part, then he's joined by his former partner in Groove Chronicles, Noodles, for the last quarter of an hour - and the first time the two have DJed back to back at a club for what, a decade? Tracks from Hard House Banton, MJ Cole and more feature alongside new dubs from El-B's Ghost label, and yes, it does feature 'Stone Cold'. Without wanting to sound too much like fannies, this mix is a little bit of history. It's not too often you can say that about something you can download in twenty minutes. MCing by Raw Smilez.

LABELS TO WATCH-BLUNTED ROBOTS
With a slew of releases between the 3 of them, this trio of fellas has been making
waves in the dubstep/uk funky/garage scene. Tunes on labels such as Planet Mu,Pollen,Ramp,Apple Pips,Berkane Sol,Formant and of course their own label Blunted Robots. There is really no defining name to fit the genre of their music. Its a cross between garage,uk funky and dubstep. Watch out for this label and the future music that comes with it.

FRMNT006 REVIEW BY SONIC ROUTER BLOG
Following on perfectly from the Texan label Formant’s last 12” platter from the much discussed Hyetal, Shortstuff, known to the copywriting world as Richard Attley, hits out at the market with his second solo 12” after the superlative ‘A Rustling’ b/w ‘Stuff’ offering on Ramp Recordings.
This three track single manages to take his broken tech infused, nearly funky sound into deeper territory; the opener ‘Progression’ jitters into life with its punctuated echoes and soulful, hot buttered bleeps contrasting the computerised bass warbling until the broken groove Shortstuff is fast making a trademark hits. Taking the garage template and twisting it into new shapes he ebbs up the drone synths, adding familiar chimes and time stretched percussion before the saw waves finally erupt.
With a synth lead reminiscent of early Planet Mu or even some of the more Boards of Canada-esque Warp releases, ‘Relapse’ displays perfectly how to create tension through melody as Attley gears up to his first breakdown with rolling chord stabs and persistent percussion; the kind that absolutely drives the whole rest of the song when it re-appears after it makes way for the low end riff.
‘A,’ the longest track on offer here, again fuses Attley’s penchant for snatches of melody with thick, sweetly compressed kick drums with the kind of wandering bass you’d more likely find accompanying 170bpm drums. Its sawing pierces your belly at high volume and really does leave the lead synths and the high end of the drums completely alone, letting them flitter and twinkle respectively showing a deeper and somewhat more subtle side to Shortstuff.

For one very special night only...
We're taking over a dope new venue, setting up a downstairs second area hosted by our GRITSY brothers in bass & last but not least... invited a very special guest from LONDON, UK to set the candles on the cake on FIRE!!!!
KLUTE!
Klute is the primary recording alias of Tom Withers, the respected drum and bass and techno Producer and DJ from London, UK.
In 2001 he established the label Commercial Suicide. This label received widespread acclaim in the electronic music community. The track "Time 4 Change" from "No One's Listening Anymore" was the last tune played on-air by John Peel.
Commercial Suicidel has also released tracks from artists like Amit, Break, Digital, Spirit, Calibre, Hive, SKC and Chris Su, establishing itself as one of the bigger players in drum and bass.
Klute's style of drum and bass is strongly influenced by techno. It is deep and progressive, with flavours of house, dub and trance, and frequent use of vocals. Although Klute is one of the most melodic and musical producers in drum and bass, his tracks are still typically intended for the DJ and dancefloor. They should not be classified alongside the atmospheric or "intelligent" drum and bass popularised by LTJ Bukem, nor should they be considered to be liquid funk

FRMNT006 Review
By The Kind Fellas @ Boomkat
Formant Recordings make their smartest move to date with a crackin' 12" from Brackles cohort, Shortstuff. His recent 12" on Ramp is one to keep an ear out for, but this record swings in favour of a more meditative and feminine feel, espeically on the brilliant A-side 'Progression'. It's one of those "what do you call it?" moments with the rhythm, sitting on the periphery of garage, dubstep and UKF but doing it's own thing in fine style, while a brittle but lilting synth melody dances over the top, leading to thoughtful pads floating out to the end, like Pearson Sound meets D1 maybe? On the flip 'Relapse' tucks into a tight Garage roll with crafty sequencing, and 'A' flows out on an ace Zomby styled tip. Wicked 12" for any fans of Zomby or Pearson sound then!
